ACTION:C.15 "Demonstrative action for the species preservation: promotion of Red-backed Shrike's groups preservation"

Issue:the causes for this issue are partly local and partly remote (modification of areas where birds are used to winter in Africa and climate changes).  The main causes for this issue are the continuous intensification of agriculture in Trentino region with the disappearance of hedges, bushes, single trees, wooden enclosures, meadows and harvesting grounds, which can be all considered as necessary elements of the red-backed shrike’s habitat. The use of pesticides reduces remarkably the number of red-backed shrike’s preys and can directly poison the animals.

Species:red-backed shrike (Lanius collurio) is a particular bird belonging to the “hunting” Passeriformes order and of great interest for the community, whose presence is decreasing on the entire European continent. Also in the region of Trentino the groups of this species, that used to be very common in past, are showing a negative evolution.

What LIFE+ T.E.N. will do: this action pursues the preservation of the environmental characteristics of a farming areas within the medium Val di Fiemme valley, that today hosts one of the largest group of red-backed shrike of the whole district. This result will be achieved by stimulating the local lots’ owners to stick to the specific measures that the Rustic Development Plan of the Autonomous Province of Trento entails for the harvesting and mowing of meadows, following methods and timing consistent with the biologic needs of red-backed shrike. The main aims are the recovery of abandoned meadows and pasture lands, the reconstruction and the preservation of hedges, dry walls and streams. These improvements of the landscape, following the measures mentioned above, should stimulate the involvement of the touristic field in the preservation of the area.

Expected results: preservation of an important group of red-backed shrike within the plan for integrated measures for the farming and touristic management of the territory.
