ACTION: C.9 "Demonstrative action for the preservation of species: improving of ecological corridors within the Adige Valley"

Issue:the environmental structure of Adige valley is today a serious obstacle for the moving and the expansion of the distributional area of many mammals on Alps, some of these are of great interest for the whole community. Brown bear (Ursus arctos), Gray wolf (Canis lupus) and Golden Jackal (Canis aureus) can hardly move from one side to the other of the big valley without putting themselves and the security of cars and trains in great danger.

Situation:Adige Valley is one of the biggest valleys of the entire Alps. On its bottom the Adige river flows after a changing on its original route made in the nineteenth century. This important river is surrounded by an environmental context made up almost entirely by intensive harvesting with some small villages and crossed by many communication paths such as roads, motorways and railways.

What LIFE+ T.E.N. will do: within the site of network NATURA 2000 “Foci dell’Avisio”, just a little bit north of Trento, a two wood belts will be created along the sides of a big flood plain that crosses the Adige Valley from east towards west. This wide area where the stream Avisio ends, represents the true “natural corridor” that crosses the entire Adige Valley between Trento and Bolzano. These wood belts should encourage the moving of animals reducing remarkably any noise coming from the local villages and offering natural areas where these animals can rest.

Expected results: a remarkable development of the functionality of the Avisio stream’s flood plain creating an “ecological territory”.
