ACTION:C.12 "Demonstrative action for the species preservation: protection of groups of yellow-bellied toad"

Issue:yellow-bellied toad is endangered in the region of Trentino as the result of the disappearance of the micro-areas in which this species usually live.

The species: Yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata) is amphibious of great interest for the community that lives in temporary wet areas with a small surface and big holes like wet depressions along the banks of rivers, alpine puddles, puddles on dirt roads and around cave areas, as well as in areas for water collection for farming purposes.

What LIFE+ T.E.N. will do: in two areas located within the Adige Valley, in particular between Lavis and Mezzolombardo, two specific actions for the environmental redevelopment will be carried out. In the first area close to some former caves, we will create some small depressions that will be filled in naturally by water thanks to the presence of the underlying ground water. In the second area, thanks to the cooperation with the Consortium of the region of Trentino for the land reclamation, the environmental structure of the rivers’ network within the plains will be improved thanks to the construction of concrete small puddles in order to recreate the suitable breeding habitat and a suitable shelter for yellow-bellied toad during the dry season, when rivers can dry out putting in danger the life of these small amphibious specimens and their larvae.

Expected results: Increase in the number and “safety” of two main groups of yellow-bellied toads in the region of Trentino that live nowadays in bad conditions because of their habitat alterations.
