2) The concept of "Ecological Network"

An ecological network is an interconnected system of areas which aims at preserving biodiversity, but in a broader sense, it is also a territorial planning strategy to be achieved through environmental redevelopment, rehabilitation of ecological connectivity and socio-economic development compatible with conservation needs.

The "physical" elements that form an ecological network are thecore areas, rich in biodiversity and which may or may not be protected under different names (parks or reserves); the buffer zones identified around the core areas to mitigate the negative interferences from outside; the ecological corridors,strips of connection between the core areas that represent the key element of ecological networks as they allow species versatility and genetic exchanges; stepping zones, small areas in a strategic position that facilitate the displacement of species or host environments of particular value.
